Let me tell you a story…   On Christmas morning I woke up groggy after a weekend spent in bed coughing & fighting a cold.  My teenagers slept.  My dog slept.  My husband slept.  My five-year-old danced around the Christmas tree singing, “Wake up, wake up, wake up!” I heard her thump down the stairs to go rouse her tall brother with more singing.  I heard the coffee pot trickle when the hubs got up.  The first thing I did… Read more »

Not MY backyard actually – their backyard!  But I’ve been thinking about this concept for a while now & this session was like the last piece of the puzzle.  I will make an announcement about these special sessions soon!   I was invited to come photograph the whole awesome family as a Mother’s Day gift.  Elyse is a treasured friend that I’ve kept in touch with in spite of moving hours & hours away & big job changes for both… Read more »

Time flies. I feel pretty lucky every time I schedule a family session. Its so obvious & fun to get pictures of the children, capturing how they are growing up, the gummy smiles, their big exaggerated tears, all the overall sentimental cuteness.  Its easy to forget as parents to get in the picture because we’re all, um… grown up. But really, what a blur life can be with three small kids under your belt.  Twins boys!  And a baby brother! And yet… Read more »

It felt warm & sunny.   On this in between-seasons kind of day, we headed for a park with a graceful weeping willow, a wet creek for rock throwing & left our jackets at home. Later, we gave the family baby a pumpkin to hold just to remind us, yes, yes it is Fall. There’s a secret going on in this shot that’s really REALLY funny.  (And all my fault.)  But I won’t tell.   She is so warm &… Read more »

Let me tell you a story…       On a warm almost-summer’s day I got a message that a baby was coming.  By late morning I arrived at their home, a house in a neighborhood that bumped into a big green park, and was let inside amid whispers of welcome & anticipation.  I readied my camera. There I found a blue pool, a great-grandma knitting, a doula soothing & supporting, a midwife reading a book with watchful… Read more »

I was recently invited to a birthday party for twin girls. There was pink & there was purple, & except for the bounce house, pretty much TWO of everything.   Did I say pretty? That was the recurrent theme of the day.  Pretty.  Their mama had her work cut out for her getting two squirmy, wriggling, excited little girls dresssed in pretty party dresses… but mom’s know how to keep their cool.     Ready to party, these two… Read more »

Was it cold? Well, yes.  But my in-laws from Portland, Oregon were visiting & I think the coast there is always a little chilly so we bundled up babies & hit the inlet in Manasquan, NJ for pictures of a new family.  And for me, crisp air that tastes like ocean & fills my lungs with nostalgia: I love the beach in winter.  Its empty & bracing & gently reminds me that warmer days are coming.   The sun was generous… Read more »

The Rustarado is a bad-ass little piece of machinery masterminded by my father-in-law, Craig Dolan. This is what I know: Its a 1954 Chevrolet Pick-up Truck. It is loud and built to be that way. There are “air bags” in the wheel wells that lift the body for driving purposes only.  They hiss like the doors on the Death Star when the truck is lowered down to park. Spied once on an entry form: “Original paint.  What’s left of it.”… Read more »
